Apprenticeships and the recovery

Since March 1st around 5.5% of apprentices and trainees have been suspended or cancelled.

In April and May the commencement of new apprentices has dipped significantly below the contraction experienced in the Global Financial Crisis.

Without significant additional support to sure up commencements, the level of apprentices and trainees will decline rapidly in the months ahead.

This paper assesses the impact of the decline set against various economic scenarios. It proposes six recommendations to address the situation and to use apprenticeships and traineeships to reduce the anticipated high levels of youth unemployment that the looming recession will bring.
